What Can Cause Hair Loss? Find Out Using New Hair Loss Treatments

Hair loss treatment options are available for anyone who's suffering from thinning hair. Minoxidil is an FDA approved ingredient that stimulates new hair growth and helps stop balding caused by hormones. There are two types of Minoxidil: topical minoxidil and systemic minoxidil. Let's take a closer look at these treatments.

One of the most popular forms of topical minoxidil is Rogaine (marketed as Propecia). Rogaine contains a chemical called minoxidil which blocks DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, the primary cause of male pattern baldness. The second type of topical minoxidil is considered less effective than Rogaine but still works wonders. It's called omega-3. What does omega-3 have to do with hair loss, though?

The primary function of biotin in the body is to make sure that your cell membranes stay healthy and well-nourished. Healthy cells produce proteins called histamine and dopamine. These two proteins play a role in maintaining a healthy hair-growing follicle and a healthy scalp. Biotin has been shown to help maintain a healthy scalp and follicles and to prevent hair loss in people who have male pattern baldness.

In men who have male pattern baldness, biotin can help prevent further loss of hair through improved hair-growing follicles and a healthy scalp. If your doctor decides that you do need a hair loss treatment based on these results, your dermatologist may suggest a biopsy or scalp biopsy. This procedure is designed to detect any follicles that may be cancerous.

If your doctor determines that you're experiencing thinning hair due to male pattern baldness, he may suggest that you have a scalp biopsy. Scalp biopsies are rather simple procedures and usually don't require anesthetics. A small hole is cut in the scalp and a camera is inserted for a closer look at the follicle. If it's cancerous, the tissue will be removed from the scalp and the area will be treated as a normal part of the hair growth.

Another type of hair loss problem that your dermatologist may recommend is androgenetic alopecia. This is also caused by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that attacks hair follicles on the head and shoulders. Your doctor may recommend testosterone therapy, which blocks DHT, or an FDA-approved cream called Minoxidil. Either option will help you regain your youthful appearance and may help prevent future loss.

Your dermatologist may also recommend a new hair loss treatment to help you. Called antiandrogen therapy, this new hair loss treatment prevents the production of testosterone. The hormone testosterone is converted into DHT when it is absorbed into the skin. Taking folic acid with the antiandrogen will stop DHT from binding with hair follicles and can actually promote new hair growth. Folic acid is available in supplement form and in tablet form. Your treatment plan will include lifestyle changes that you can begin taking advantage of today. You'll likely be given a dietary supplement to help you make the most of your limited intake of food rich in vitamins A, B, C and E. Foods like soybeans and flaxseed will help prevent your body from absorbing too much DHT. Taking multi-vitamins with high amounts of niacin can also benefit you. Niacin has been proven to reduce the amount of testosterone that's absorbed into your skin. So if you're wondering what the best treatment plan is for you, go see your doctor or dermatologist today.
